Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps). Provided EBT card is used as currency for eligible food items at certain retailers. Must meet current income eligibility requirements. More information, appeal forms, etc. here.
Cash assistance for eligible, low-income families to be used for housing, utilities, and food. Time-limited program with a 5-year federal limit (states may shorten limit). Virginia allows for 24 consecutive months while enrolled in the work incentive progmam (VIEW). Hardship exceptions allow for 24 month extension if in school or training (must apply within 60 days of initial 24 month end). Any TANF participation in other states counts toward the 5 year maximum. Virginia's Energy Assistance Program. Includes: fuel assistance, crisis assistance (heating related), cooling assistance (utility bills + equipment) and weatherization assistance (energy efficiency and air filtration). More information can be found here.
Virginia has multiple medical assistance programs. Some categories include children under 19, pregnant women, SSI recipients, adults 65 and older/blind/disabled (not receiving SSI), family planning, and more. Managed Care plans are through Cardinal Care. More information can be found here.
The above link allows users to search for child care. Services are for children under the age of 13. Those in need of assistance can apply for the Child Care Subsidy Program if employed or searching for a job, participating in an education/training program, or otherwise. Homeless children may be elibible conditionally for 90 days. Also, The Fee System Day Care Program offers day care for families not on public assistance using a sliding fee scale. Virginia Insurance Marketplace. Coverage available to those who do not qualify for Medicaid, who are unemployed, self-employed, or those not insured by their place of employment. Persons with Virginia Medicaid can use this search tool to find providers in their area. Clients will need to know if their particular Medicaid program is Fee for Service or under a MCO. Another option is for clients to identify specifically if they are under Aetna, Anthem, Humana, Sentara, or UnitedHealthcare with their Medicaid plan and use the corresponding provider search.
Non-profit 501c3 working to expand healthcare access regardless of ability to pay. Primary care, pediatric care, specialty care, dental care, chronic illness management, prescription medication, women's health, case management services, school based health, and more are available. Same day "Quick Care" appointments are sometimes available in Danville; call 434.791.4122. All insurances are supposedly accepted at PATHS.
Hospital. Transparent pricing can be viewed via the spreadsheets listed here. They offer financial counseling and can assist clients in signing up for Medicaid. If an uninsured client is unable to afford their hospital bill, they can apply for the Charity Care Policy. The policy runs off of the current Federal Poverty Guidelines and can offer discounted or free services, including coverage of past bills as long as they are not yet with a collection agency. 24/7 dispatch mobile doctors in the Danville/Pittsylvania area. Offers medical consult and treatment. There is also a healthcare center that offers same day appointments. Mobile X-rays, labs, and more are available. All commercial insurances and Medicaid/Medicare are accepted. Fee-for-service model is followed for those not insured. Nonprofit credit counseling and financial education services. Their credit counseling is entirely free and offered 24/7. Other financial education services are offered and some (post-disaster) are free while others (homebuyer counseling) may cost around $50-$200.
